Heirloom Tomatoes are simply the best tomato! They have the most amazing flavor and aroma which makes them so fun to play with in different recipes. Growing up in a household that was always filled with fresh fruits and veggies, I developed an appreciation for these tomatoes. To be honest, I’m not really a tomato fan. But I will eat these heirlooms all day!
I have done a lot of experimenting with heirlooms, considering they are the only tomato I really love. I have found that the simpler the recipe, the better it is! They have such an amazing flavor on their own that I like to use ingredients that really bring that out. A simple caprese salad is my go to!

This salad comes together in less than 10 minutes and is an absolute crowd pleaser. It is ideal for these warm summer nights we get at the end of August.
Now, I know everybody says this but fresh ingredients are a must with this salad! Fresh basil and fresh mozzarella make all the difference in the world, trust me!
This recipe can be tweaked to your liking. For example, I load this baby up with balsamic vinegar, but some people don’t like any at all. Sometimes, I won’t add the pepper, sometimes I will add all the pepper.
Let me know if you give this a try. I promise you’ll wish we had Heirloom Tomatoes every week at Fresh Gen Foods!
Ingredients
- 3 Heirloom Tomatoes
- 1 Clamshell of Fresh Basil
- 8 ounces of Mozzarella Cheese, sliced
- Salt
- Pepper
- 1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Dash of Balsamic Vinegar
Instructions
Step 1
Slice the tomatoes about a 1/4 inch thick and salt generously. (I have found a serrated knife works best for neatly slicing the tomatoes).
Step 2
Arrange the tomatoes, mozzarella and basil on your serving dish. Alternate slices of tomato, mozzarella and basil.
Step 3
Drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the salad and then drizzle balsamic vinegar. Add pepper to taste.
